I have been thinking a lot about these kinds of things. For me it all comes back to design and purpose. The making of something that is designed for a purpose other than how much money it makes. It must be designed for someone. Not the 'average consumer' but clearly designed to fulfill a meaningful purpose.

From the Steve Jobs article...

"My passion has been to build an enduring company where people were motivated to make great products. The products, not the profits, were the motivation."

So many industries need to realise this, not least the one I work in.

PS beer some time soon?

Hi Thomas

I've updated the post - neither worked for me, and I went on to test the Canon 28mm f1.8 and Sigma 30mm f1.4 too. I preferred the Sigma overall for the sort of shots I wanted to take (for example, indoor low light portraits of friends and family).

Fat Face's website doesn't seem to carry the stock, but sometimes the stores are different. Alternatively a search for "canvas bags" brings up some possible options - this looks like a good, discreet, small option - http://www.surfdome.com/billabong_satchels_-_billabong_dune_satchel_-_black-56675

Thanks a lot for the info Phil - sadly it looks like it's a collectors' item now. I'll just have to keep looking for something similar...

I've been thinking the same way, and been looking for a strong canvas-style bag to match the insert. Where did you get the bag you show here, Phil, that you say you've had for a couple of years? It looks exactly like the elusive one I've been searching for!

Agree with Howard's comments. The only thing I would add would be to play around with their auto focus abilities - how fast, how reliable...

Check DOF wide open, there will be a noticable difference.

Check sharpness at f2.8 on both, I'd expect the 35/2 to be sharper as it's stopped down 1 stop.

See which focal length works best for YOU what the rest of us think is unimportant.

Decide if the 2x light gathering and resulting 2x faster shutter speed of the 35/2 is important indoors without flash.

See which gives the most pleasing bokeh

Definitely looks like a mid/late-70s Bridget Riley to me, probably To a Summer's Day, for what it's worth?

Fascinating artist, well worth learning more about if this sort of picture appeals to you; the Tate retrospective in 2003 was a brilliant exhibition.
